Behind The Label

Founded in 1946 by three New England friends-Daniel J. Wellehan Sr., William Beaudoin, and Joseph Cordeau-Sebago set out to craft high-quality footwear that would stand the test of time. Their first product, a hand-sewn penny loafer, drew inspiration from the traditional Indian moccasin, featuring the company's patented welt construction. This innovative design quickly gained popularity, and Sebago soon saw rapid growth. By 1954, the brand had already produced its millionth pair, with their shoes being sold in major retailers like Sears and Montgomery Ward. During the 1950s and 60s, Sebago expanded its product range, introducing women's styles and reaching international markets. In 1970, the brand introduced its most iconic design-the 'Dockside' boat shoe, celebrated for its hand-sewn moccasin construction, slip-resistant rubber sole, and non-corrosive brass eyelets. Worn by style icons such as Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, Kate Middleton, and Pharrell Williams, the Dockside has become synonymous with timeless nautical style.
